Sacred Threads – Knots of Belief
It is a belief in Hinduism that a sacred thread could save you from the evil spirit and bad faith.
Specific mantras and ‘Sookthas’ are chanted by the temple priest while making such knotted threads..
Subramanya Temple,Karnatka, Manglore

The custom of using such charmed threads and objects to guard against the evil and bring fortune dates back to very ancient periods which includes the time when talismans & amulets were n great vogue;they were supposed to create some magical impacts on the bearer and were inevitably associated with the myths surrounding exorcism & intercession, not just n Hinduism but n various active religions from time to time. Your pics and descriptions lead the viewers to a bewitching spell of mystery and uncanny experience…….as usual, nothing more to say….just wonderful….!
I got a sacred thread, for my safety, knotted around the handle of my luggage before I leave India.
I’m not a Hindu but I felt much more secured.
Thanks

Stunning post, as usual Ranadive! Threads, amulets, taveez – I believe many cultures have similar beliefs. A friend from Tibet gifted me a thread, another friend from a Sufi dargah! Now…one waits from Ranadive to me!!! lol.
Love your blog! Cheers.
I think it’s kind of amazing how there are certain rituals that go across different cultures and beliefs. The Chinese have a few spiritual practices that involves tying things to trees as well.
